Spider Man: Shattered Dimensions is centered around an artifact known as the Tablet of Order and Chaos. After it was broken during a fight between Amazing Spider-Man and Mysterio, its fragments scattered into different dimensions, creating chaos across them all. Madame Web enlists Amazing Spider-Man along with three alternate versions to recover tablet fragments and restore order across them all – each controlling differently while taking on unique villains.

The opening level opens with an attempt by an underhanded individual to steal the Tablet of Order and Chaos from a university. When Amazing Spider-Man foiled their attempt, he realized each fragment granted special powers; sending his counterparts after those missing pieces while remaining behind himself to prevent Mysterio from taking advantage.

Each Spider-Men has his or her own distinct gameplay experience. Noir and Ultimate universes emphasize stealthy tactics as well as large scale combat encounters; for instance in Noir Peter Parker battles alternate versions of Hammerhead and Norman Osborn while in Ultimate Peter dons his black suit that often explodes with uncontrolled anger; to help manage its power levels, players may use telepathic communication with Madame Web.
